Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Pau

Participants will be picked up from Pau and Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port railway stations at 11am to visit to the town centre and take their first short walk in the Ibañeta forest. Overnight stay in Espinal.

Leg duration: 5hrs - Ascent: 200m - Descent: 200m

Day 2: Hike in the Sierre del Perdon

Short visit to Pamplona, the capital of Navarre and San Fermines. Hike in the Sierre del Perdon. Overnight in Puente, the crossroads of the pilgrim routes of Arles and Puy.

Leg duration: 5hrs - Ascent: 300m - Descent: 300m

Day 3: Lizarra - Los Arcos

Hike through Lizarra, one of the most beautiful villages in Navarre. Participants pass the monastery of Irache to Los Arcos.

Leg duration: 4hrs - Ascent: 200m - Descent: 200m

Day 4: Rioja - Burgos

Short stop in Logroño, the capital of La Rioja. Participants visit to the monasteries of Yuso and Suso. Crossing of the small town Santo Domingo de la Calzada, then hike over the Montes de Oca to the Yacimiento de Atapuerca. Overnight stay in a lodging typical of Burgos.

Day 5: Burgos - Carrion

Participants pay a short visit to Burgos and Fromista. Afterwards, they will hike through the Castilian countryside followed by an overnight in Carrion.

Day 6: Hike through the Meseta

The Meseta, a huge, desert-like high plateau that represented a real challenge for pilgrims. After completing this stage, participants will spend the night in an oasis village.

Day 7: Sahagun - Astorga

Participants hike from Sahagun to discover the city of Leon as well as Astorga, the capital of Maragateria. A short sightseeing hike to the river of Orbigo and across the bridge will lead them there.

Leg duration: 5hrs - Ascent: 100m - Descent: 100m

Day 8: Leon - Ponferrada

Participants hike through the hills of Leon and the green municipality of Molinaseca. Overnight stay in Ponferrada at the foot of the Templar Castle.

Leg duration: 5hrs - Ascent: 500m - Descent: 300m

Day 9: Hike in Galicia

Approaching the comerca of El Bierzo, participants will hike through the mountain village of El Cebreiro and on to the Monastery of St. Julian in Samos. Final stop for the day is the lake and village of Portomarin in Galicia.

Day 10: Final stretch to Santiago

Beautiful forests of pine and eucalyptus trees on today's hike. Participants also cross the Monte de Gozo. The group finally reach Santiago where they will receive an overview of the city's pilgrimage history.

Day 11: Finally Santiago and the Cape Finisterre

Participants continue exploring Santiago before an excursion along the pretty oceanic rias and Cape Finisterre that jutts out into the ocean.
They return to Santiago for a tapas dinner in town.

Day 12: Bus back to France

All they way back to Pau, the starting point of the trip. Participants spend the night at a hotel along the way.

Day 13: Departure

The bus arrives in Pau at around 12:30pm. Guests can take their respective connections home

Travel dates

This trip begins and ends at Pau train station.
We kindly ask participants to organize to and from Pau themselves. They may extend their holiday if they wish and have the possibility of leaving the hiking group once it reaches Santiago.

Meals:
The lunchtime picnics are prepared by the respective hosts. Alternatively, you can eat in restaurants along the route. There the meals consist to a large extent of the respective daily menus (no possibility for the menu choice). Please be aware that the picnic in Spain is not part of the traditional food culture. Your picnics will be prepared from local meat products in the form of bocadillos (Spanish sandwiches) or omelettes. Your guide will make sure you have the additional option of his own prepared salads if hygiene permits and topping up the picnic with fresh fruit, local produce and cheese.

Level of difficulty: easy

This trip is suitable for all who regularly do sports or are experienced hikers.
Average length of the hikes: 5 hours per day including sightseeing time and an average elevation difference of 100-300m.

This beautiful pilgrimage along the Pilgrim's Way to Santiago is not a pilgrimage in the true sense of the word and does not entitle the holder to the award of the Compostelana, which is presented to pilgrims by the Bishop of Santiago.
