Pine forests, olive groves, painted chapels, churches, Baroque architectur and Naive paintings are wainting for you on this cultural hike in the hinterland of Nice.
This hike leads you through the most beautiful vvillages of the French Riviera and the hinterland of Nice.
You wil lpass along painted chapels and retables that are the witnesses of a particular art style from the 15th and 16 th century: The Primitifs Niçois (Naive painting from Nice), influenced by the italian art family Bréa. Next to it, you can discover the religious architectur, as for example altars, from the Baroque time.
You walk alonf an almost forgotten path, that used to be the most important route for the Salt business. During the Winter time this path is bordered by hardly fed lemon and orange trees. From the mountains you climb down to the sea, crossing valleys and pass, perched villages, pine forests and olive groves.
Day 1: Arrival in Nice and Saint-Dalmas-de-Tende
After your arrival in Nice, you can use you day in order to discover the cultural side of the city (Diverse Baroque chapels, old narrow streets, retable of Louis Bréa…), before driving with you own car or raking the train to Saint-Dalmas-de-Tende, where you will spend the night.
Day 2: Tende and La Brigue
In the morning, you take the train to Tende and visit its church with its Baroque retable and its italian organ. You can also discover the medieval streets in the village. You begin the hike by crossing the pass of Boselia (1111 m) to La Brigue. Then you go to the chapel of Notre-Dame des Fontaines which possesses the biggest wall painting in the Alps, before coming back on your feet or by train to your accommodation in Saint-Dalmas.
Duration: 5 h (+1 h to Saint Dalmas) – Ascent: 400 m – Descent: 400 m
Day 3: Saint-Dalmas – Fontan – Saorge
A wonderful way leads you to the gorges of the Roya from Saint-Dalmas over the hamlets Granile and Berghe to Fontan, one of the most beautiful village in the region with its Baroque church and its traditional architectur. The last stage from Fontan to Saorge can be made by foot or by bus.
Duration: 4 h (+ 45 min to Saorge) – Ascent: 400 m – Descent: 600 m
Day 4: Saorge – Breil sur Roya
After a discovery tour of the beautiful village Saorge with its Baroque Franciscan cloister from the 17th and 18th century and its chapel Notre Dame del Poggio, you begin the hike over the valley of the Roya to Breil , a splendid path with some abrupt ascents. In Breil sur Roya you will stare at one of the most beautiful Baroque chirch in the hinterland of Nice with its rococo organ from the 18th century.
Duration: 4 h 30 – Ascent: 300 m – Descent: 600 m
Day 5: Breil sur Roya – Piène Haute – Sospel
Today you follow an amazing path that offers you a panorama sight on the olive groves of Breil sur Roya to Sospel. On the way, you can visit the village Piène Haute that hosts a Baroque church from the 18th century.
Duration: 5 h 30 – Ascent: 450 m – Descent: 450 m
Day 6: Sospel – Sainte Agnès
On the morning, you will visit the cathedral of Sospel, before the bus takes you to the Col de Castillon. From there, you will hike over the sumnit Mont Ours (1239 m) to Sainte Agnès, the highest village on the French Riviera.
Duration: 4 h – Ascent: 550 m – Descent: 500 m
Day 7: Sainte Agnès – Menton
Today, you can choose between two itineraries:
Alternative 1: Through pine forests you walk on the path Balcon de la Côte d'Azur to the village Castellar and finally over the Baousset directly to the harbour of Menton.
Duration: 4 h 30 – Ascent: 200 m – Descent: 850 m
Alternative 2: On a perched path you hike to Gorbio and then down to the village Roquebrune. From there a path in a stairs shape leads you directly to the sea. Walking along the coast you will reach finally Menton.
In Menton you visit the old town, the Baroque church St Michel and the museum Jean Cocteau.
The hike ends at approx. 3.30 pm in Menton. From there you can take the bus or the train back to Nice.

Please bear in mind that the French Riviera is not a hilly region, but more a mountainous region with a distinctive alpine relief.
The luggage will be brought from one accommodation to another. In the day, you carry only your personnal belongings (Camera, wallet…) and your picnic.
Hikers will be given detailed description (1 Roadbook for 4 Persons) of the itinerary. Please feel free to ask us for advices for an excursion in Nice on the last day.
Start of this self-guided walking is in Saint Dalmas de Tende (on the evening). We recommend to begin your trip on the morning ( if possible on Sunday) in Nice.
You can begin the trip each day during the week but only on Sunday, the baroque chapels in the old -Nice are open to the public.
Thanks to the bland climate on the French Riviera, this tour can be made almost the all year.
We recommend you an eco-friendly journey with the train to the train station of Nice or over Turin with a change in Cuneo to Saint-Dalmas-de-Tende.
