Set off on a microadventure on the Cathar Trail by following our local guide from Quéribus to Peyrepertuse, the best preserved citadel of vertigo in the Cathar country. A moderately sporty hike for lovers of historical outings.
Morning day 1: Quéribus - Cucugnan
Participants meet at the Château de Quéribus car park at 9:30am. They can also be picked up at the Quillan / Maury SNCF Bus stop at 9:08am.
After a short climb up to the Château de Quéribus perched at 728m, your local guide, Djamila, will tell you the history of this site which was home to many Cathars and came off relatively unscathed during the Crusade against the Albigensians. On a clear day you can see the Pyrenees and the Mediterranean.
The group then descend to Cucugnan following a steep stony path, ending with an ample picnic.
Afternoon day 1: From Cucugnan to Peyrepertuse
Participants continue on from Cucugnan, the ancient Castrum that once belonged to the Count of Razès who protected fleeing Cathars. At the end of the village of Duilhac sous Peyrepertuse, your guide will take a steep path uphill (+400 m of gradient - about a 30 min walk) through holm oaks, boxwoods and pines leading to the Fortress (off the Cathar Trail). The site of Peyrepertuse is made up of three parts: lower enclosure, middle enclosure and Sant Jordy dungeon. The site also offers a breathtaking view of the Corbières.
Walking time: 4hrs 30min - distance covered: 8 km - difference in altitude: 350 m
Return to the car park, marking the end of the microadventure (people coming by coach will be taken back to the Bus-SNCF stop at Maury or Quillan).
