Itinerary

The following itinerary is an example. You may choose to start your tour in Toulouse, Sète, Narbonne or Carcassonne and feel free to shorten or extend your trip.

Day 1: Arrival near Narbonne.
Upon your arrival near Narbonne, your hostesses Anne and Cathy will welcome you at your first B&B. Should you arrive by train, you may request a pick-up service at the train station (payable on site). Before dinner, the wine growers Anne and Cathy will be happy to give you a tour of their vineyard and let you explore the world of viticulture.

Day 2: Narbonne – Island Sainte Marie or Port la Nouvelle at the Mediterranean Sea.
After breakfast you will receive your rental bikes and embark on your first tour towards the Mediterranean Sea and the nature reserve island Sainte Lucie via the Canal de Jonction and the Canal de la Robine. To shorten this stage, simply have your hostesses take you to Narbonne and start from there or have them pick you up in Port la Nouvelle.
Distance (full stage): approx. 42 km / 26 mi

Day 3: Narbonne – Minerve – Homps
Take a detour to visit the historical rock city of Minerve where the Catharers once sought shelter from the army of Simon de Montfort. Continue on to Homps where you will enjoy a local dinner at your next B&B.
Distance: approx. 42 km / 26 mi

Day 4: Homps – Carcassonne

After breakfast, head out towards Trèbes, cross the Canal du Midi and follow the street Riquet, named after the architect of the Canal du Midi. In Carcassonne, take advantage of the rest of the afternoon to visit the lower part of the town and its beautiful historic center. Cross the Porte de l'Aude and enjoy a breathtaking view of the Cité de Carcassonne. Spend the next couple of nights in a B&B in the heart of Carcassonne's historic city center.
Distance: approx. 30 km / 19 mi

Day 5: Carcassonne
Spend a day exploring the medieval city of Carcassonne. Discover its impressive walls, its majestic castel, its tournament squares and its narrow alleys with their diverse shops and arts studios.

Day 6: Carcassonne – Castelnaudary
Today's route to Castelnaudary will allow you to visit to of the most impressive structures of the Canal du Midi: the Epanchoir de Faucaud and at the Aqueduc de Rebenty. In Castelnaudary, discover the Pont neuf (the “new bridge” built in 1788), the Vieux pont (The “old”, 17th century bridge”), the Grand bassin and the bridge Saint Roch.
Distance: approx. 37 km / 23 mi

Day 7: Castelnaudary – Naurouze – Departure
A final bike tour (approx. 8 km) will take you to the Bassin de Naurouze, an octagonal holding tank built at the same time as the Canal du Midi and abandoned a few years later due to recurrent silting issues. Take in the beautiful canal landscape and architecture before heading home or towards the Mediterranean Sea to spend some relaxing vacation days at the beach. Have a look at our beach chalets at Gruissan's all-natural beach!

Reviews for Bicycle tour on the Canal du Midi with children
